Last week, Precious Plastic Monash hosted our friends from Indonesia as a part of our ongoing collaboration with Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS). We welcomed Professor Cucuk Budiyanto and Professor Indah Widiastuti from UNS, as well as educators Riski and Jefri from a local community education centre.
On the first day, the UNS staff toured our workshop and the engineering facilities at Monash University. We then had the opportunity to discuss waste management and education strategies. The following day, we hosted a lecture titled "Contextualising the Plastic Waste Issue Beyond Australia". Professor Cucuk delivered a lecture discussing the plastic waste issue in Indonesia and explaining UNS's involvement with the nearby community education centre, where they inspire young people to tackle problems of waste and sustainability in innovative and hands-on ways.
The experience was valuable for everyone involved, and we learned a lot about the plastic waste issue in Indonesia and different ways of engaging young people.
