Design Challenge

March 14 and 15 saw Precious Plastic Monash host its inaugural Design Challenge. The goal of this two-day event was for entrants to design a jewellery product that could be made from recycled plastic. We had a small but determined group of students enter, ready to learn and express their creativity.

On day one, the students learnt about PPM’s history and why plastic pollution is such a large problem. They also got to see the Integration Unit up close and understand how it has been used in the past to make products. They then began designing their products and started creating some prototypes in the workshop!

Day two was filled with finalising the prototypes and presentations. These presentations were arguably the most interesting and impressive aspect of the whole event. They showcased how passionate each person was about their design, how they would have a positive impact on the community and how they aligned with PPM’s values.

Sadly only one team could take first place, and this was awarded to the Groovy Cats (later renamed the Sea Rings) for their ocean-themed earrings, which act as an important conversation starter about plastic pollution in our waterways. However, the judges and PPM were so impressed with both designs that we are now collaborating to make both of them a reality - this means that the Queerings’ “Planets for the Planet” moon-themed earrings, making a statement about the plastic problem on Earth and bisexuality, will also be made!

A big thank you must go out to everyone who helped with this event - to our PPM volunteers on the days, to those working behind the scenes to craft the trophies and organise the event, to our wonderful judges, and of course to our two teams! We wouldn’t have had such an enjoyable time if not for your enthusiasm and creativity.

Until next time!
